What to expect from a Upper Cervical Chiropractor

The main objective of an Upper Cervical Chiropractor is to restore the entire spine to a balanced, unstressed position.  Specific x-rays are used to evaluate the exact position of the atlas (the first bone at the top of the spine).  From the x-rays, the doctor is able to see if the atlas has tilted, shifted, or rotated from its normal anatomical position.  By utilizing vector analysis, calculus and physics the doctor is able to calculate the exact position of the atlas.  The slightest degree of displacement of the atlas from its normal position can cause body imbalance and brainstem compression, resulting in increased health problems.  Based on the x-ray analysis, the doctor applies a slight pressure to the atlas, which is located just below the ear, to gently re-position the atlas to a more optimum position.  This re-positioning is what restores body and nervous system balance.

The Upper Cervical adjustment requires no twisting, popping and cracking.  When the atlas correction is made and body balance is restored, muscles begin to relax, blood and oxygen circulation is increased, messages are transmitted more effectively from the brain to the body and the healing process begins.

The body may respond in different ways following the Upper Cervical correction.  Responses may include:

·        Alleviation of pain and symptoms

·        Tired and/or relaxed feeling

·        Light headedness/headache

·        Sinus drainage or popping in the ears

·        Joint popping as muscles relax

·        Throbbing or tingling sensations in various areas of the body

·        Muscle soreness over the first few days as misalignments throughout the body are corrected

·        Pain in the area of an old injury

·        Skin temperature changes, sometimes perspiration changes

·        Body elimination changes (diarrhea or constipation)

·        Painful areas may shift to other areas of the body

The severity of the spinal condition will determine the amount of recovery time an individual will need.  Some patients achieve relief immediately, while others take more time.  Being out of pain doesn't mean your body is healed.  Usually, recovery (healing) takes about six months for every year the spine has been in an unbalanced or misaligned position.
